Cross the River

Goals: Problem solving and discussion

Preparation: Nothing. Just draw a diagram on the board or make a worksheet.



  •    Put the students into pairs or small groups.
  •    Explain that a farmer went to a market and bought a fox, a kiwi, and a bag of beans. When going home, he had to take his boat to cross a river, but he could only carry himself and a single one of his purchases at a time.
  •    If left together, the fox would eat the kiwi or the kiwi would eat the beans.
  •    How does he get across with everything he bought?


  •    Take kiwi over
  •    Return
  •    Take fox or beans over
  •    Return with kiwi
  •    Take beans or fox over
  •    Return
  •    Take kiwi over


  • Mix it up with these if you want:

– A wolf, a sheep and a pile of grass

– A tiger, a chicken and a bag of worms

– A lion, a child and a bag of sweets.

  • 生徒は2人組か小さいグルップになる。
  • この話を説明する。牧場の人は市場に行って、狐、キウィ、豆に入っている袋を買ったけど、家まで行くのに小さい船に乗らないといけない。あまりスペイスがないから、一つの物ずつ持って行かないと。
  • 只、彼はいないなら、狐はキウィを食べるし、キウィは豆を食べる。
  • どうやって彼と全部の買い物が川を渡?


  • キウィを船で持って行く
  •  帰る
  •  狐か豆を持って行く
  •  鶏と帰る
  • 狐か豆を持って行く
