Can’t Say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ / 『イエス』と『ノウ』が言えない

Goals: Practice asking and answering questions with more complicated responses

Preparation: Five poker chips or anything to denote points for each student if you want to make it more competitive

· Students mingle and ask each other questions. When they answer, they cannot say “yes” or “no”, or else they have to hand over a poker chip.

· They must think of more original responses. They’ll soon get the hang of it and start trying to find tricky ways to ask questions.

· You could demo some of the following ideas first:

Do you like sushi?

Not really / Actually, I love sushi / I don’t know. I’ve never tried it.

Have you played rugby before?

Never, but I want to try it. / To be honest, I don’t know anything about rugby / I used to play it everyday, but not anymore.

Variation: Instead of using poker chips, you can make students sit down if they say “yes” or “no,” and the winner will be the last person standing.

Do you like sushi?

Not really / Actually, I love sushi / I don’t know. I’ve never tried it.

Have you played rugby before?

Never, but I want to try it. / To be honest, I don’t know anything about rugby / I used to play it everyday, but not anymore.
